Lolita's Personality

They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they also make wonderful companions for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their roar.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this, the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex has been determined, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to the sea.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative, on a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her retirement from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.
